Advantages of Hardness Test in Application
1) When testing hardness, the stress state of its loading mode is the softest (a>2), that is, the maximum shear stress is much greater than the maximum normal stress. Any metal material will undergo plastic deformation under this stress state, and the tested sample will not be completely destroyed even if it is very brittle. Therefore, in principle, any metal material can be subjected to indentation hardness test, and the tested material can be guaranteed not to be destroyed, that is, the hardness test can be regarded as a non-destructive test. This is very important for many parts.
2) When the part cannot be processed into other mechanical properties specimens, the hardness test is the only mechanical properties test. For some large parts, a portable hardness tester can also be used for hardness testing.
3) Hardness test can be used to identify the organizational composition or phase composition of metal (such as microhardness, etc.), and can be used to check the quality of thin sheets or surface layers (such as the surface layer of chemical heat-treated parts, metal plating or coating, etc.). This is difficult to do with other mechanical properties tests.
4) Hardness test equipment and operation are relatively simple, convenient and easy to master.
5) It is particularly useful that there is a certain relationship between hardness and other properties. Therefore, when producing, researching and selecting materials, hardness testing can be used to quickly judge and test other mechanical properties of metal materials and their products, as well as control and optimize processes during production and research.
It is precisely because of these characteristics of hardness testing that it is widely used in production and research. Hardness testing has become the most basic, preferred, and indispensable test method for material mechanical properties testing.
